A place of memory and safety : The Grinding Stones

Sculpted on wood panel, foam, plaster, acrylic paint, glass mirror

Our aunties and tutus were women in these places

Free and safe to laugh and care for each other

They sat by the rivers and ground life from the earth,

Kwávichu

Water and mineral, laughter and love

I saw myself there

I looked into the water collected in the stone and saw them too

They look back at me

And these stones remind us they have always cared for this place

These rocks hold me now

Like they held them then
